African delegates boost skills in Codex engagement and negotiations at BTSF training in Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya, 3 October 2025 – Delegates from across Africa gathered in Nairobi for an intensive three-day workshop to sharpen their skills in participating in all aspects of Codex work. Organized under the European Union’s Better Training for Safer Food (BTSF) initiative, the training equipped participants with practical tools to strengthen their voices in international food safety debates.

From day one, participants explored Codex history, governance and procedures and engaged with the tutors asking multiple of questions. Sessions spotlighted key committees – from fresh fruits and vegetables to contaminants and veterinary drug residues – to give delegates a clear sense of where and how they can contribute.

The highlight of the event was a mock session where participants were assigned roles of member and observer delegates and prepared positions, negotiated with each other, and refined their strategies in simulations that mirrored the real Codex process. By the end of the week, they weren’t just listening to lectures – they were practicing the very skills they will need at Codex meetings.

Hands-on training for real Codex challenges

The workshop saw strong engagement from participants, reflected in active contributions to discussions and knowledge sharing. This enthusiasm fostered a collaborative atmosphere and enhanced the learning environment and outcomes. 

Gaspar Avendano Perez of the European Commission noted “Our BTSF aimed to build capacity to enable countries to actively shape international standards. These standards, in turn, enhance food safety and facilitate trade – what generates income and economic strength”.

Looking ahead: a stronger African voice

Looking ahead to the Codex Strategic Plan 2026–2031, participants discussed how Africa can play a stronger role in shaping global standards and their importance for promoting intra-African trade. Networking opportunities fostered stronger cross-border collaboration, building the foundations for more coordinated regional voice.

Hakim Mufumbiro, Regional Coordinator for Africa, stressed the importance of building a critical mass of African experts who can drive the region`s active engagement in Codex activities while ensuring a united voice on matters of interest to the continent.

Closing remarks emphasized that the training was not an endpoint but a starting point. Equipped with new skills, participants are better prepared to ensure that African priorities are heard – and that global standards reflect the realities of food safety and trade in the region.

I particularly appreciated the numerous networking opportunities and rich exchanges between Members, organizers and trainers” said Mamodou Bah of the Gambia, recently nominated as the next Regional Coordinator for Africa.
